Meet Tek … our latest special needs dog! Will you help him?
Tek is a 3-year-old red and white male Siberian Husky whose back leg has swelled to about four times the size of his other leg and it has been this way for over a year. Several veterinarians were contacted by Tek’s previous owner but none could diagnose him without very expensive tests. We took Tek to our vet at Belleville Animal Hospital to get his opinion. We were told that no matter what’s wrong with his leg, it has been this way for so long that it will never go back to normal and it must be amputated.
The cost to amputate Tek’s leg and for tests and his care afterwards will exceed $1,500. We are once more asking for your help. This is a really nice dog who either has to have his leg amputated or he may have to be euthanized. Dogs do very well with three legs and Tek deserves a chance.
Update 07/13/10 -- Tek had surgery on Thursday, July 8, to remove his back leg. He is doing remarkably well and has no problem walking, going up the three steps into the house, jumping into the car or jumping up on the couch! Our biggest challenge is keeping him from licking or chewing at the staples! He hates the cone-shaped e-collar so we have purchased inflatable ProCollars and he doesn't seem to mind them as much, although we have to use two of them because of Tek's determination to get at the staples! We have included photos and a video of Tek in his online album. The photos can be a little shocking but will be less so when he regrows his fur! The biopsy results are in and Tek had an "infiltrating lipoma," which is a benign tumor but one that invades muscle tissue. We expect Tek to be running with the other dogs in about two weeks and will add that video to his album at that time! Thank you to all that contributed to Tek's surgery. We are very grateful for your help!
Update 08/03/10 -- FOX 2 News invited Tek to visit their studio on July 27th for a follow-up broadcast news segment. Just three weeks after surgery, Tek is thoroughly enjoying his new-found mobility! You can see in the video below that he is having great fun running around and playing as capably as other dogs that have all four of their legs, then cooling off in this summer's heat by swimming in a kiddie pool.

All donations are used strictly for the care of the dogs and include vaccinations, treatment for parasites, and spay/neuter surgery. In addition, they often come into rescue with kennel cough, respiratory infections, malnutrition or other conditions associated with abuse, neglect, or life as a stray. They seldom have had the benefit of loving care from a caring owner, and thus rarely arrive in perfect health. Most importantly, we have a limited number of foster homes, so sometimes a kennel fee is the only thing that stands between a dog being euthanized in a shelter and our ability to offer emergency placement. Your donation, regardless of size, is always very gratefully accepted. All donations are used for the care of the dogs awaiting their forever homes.
The dogs helped by Closer to Home Animal Advocates, both past and future, send you a grateful wag of the tail for your donation of any size!
